Customer Profile
The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices is an independent German federal regulator under the auspices of the Health and social Safety federal ministry. The main field of activity is the approval and supervision of drugs, the central collection, analysis and assessment of risks with medical products as well as the supervision of the legal narcotic and basic material traffic including the disbursement of narcotic prescriptions and management of the substitution register.
Project Goals
The federal regulator had been using an old BS2000 system, which could no longer keep up with the ever increasing data volumes and user requirements.

Table 1 : Size of frequently queried database tables
The main project goal was to migrate the old data and to develop a system that supported and optimized the operational procedures of the federal regulator, without the need for the employees to get used to new operational procedures. At the same time, queries involving large data volumes had to be answered quickly.
Solution Advantages
The system stands out through its multifaceted interfaces to MS Word, MS Excel and other propriatery systems. Working efficiency was achieved through the exact illustration of the federal regulator operational procedures. That became evident from the fact, that new employees did no longer have to be trained, but instead could learn their new operational procedures by working with the system. The data consistensy can be checked much easier than before as well as automatically be backed up. Paper receipts are being managed by the system and can be reproduced at any time, thereby reducing the amount of archival storage space.
