Customer Profile

Schering AG is a research-based pharmaceutical company. Its activities are focused on four business areas: Gynecology & Andrology, Oncology, Diagnostic Imaging as well as Specialized Therapeutics for disabling diseases.

Project Goals

The project's goal was to create with such a solution a virtual community of employees spread around the various locations of the organization (technical administrators, study managers, clinical research associates, statisticians and biometricians, data managers, medical writers, investigators, employees of the Global Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance (GCP) and Global Medical Surveillance departments as well as upper management) in which all relevant information regarding the latest status of clinical studies could be made available in a unified environment. The challenge was to extract all relevant information out of a plethora of distributed clinical data sources (i.e. ClinTrial, Impact), avoid presenting duplicate and out-of-date information as well as present the information in a personalized and localized manner according to the centrally stored user profiles.

Solution

An IBM WebSphere Portal and WebSphere Application Server based portlet system was developed, which makes information residing primarily in Oracle based clinical IT systems available to the portal user through a unified interface. Built on top of a data repository with structured information and featuring role based user management, the system dynamically provides personalized information as well as secure access to specific data and documents. Because of the diverse user groups accessing the portal, all portal configurations are automatically generated from the repository model.

The solution provides the following advantages:

  • Single Sign On – the master password is being used in order to provide access to all of the users applications through the portal.
  • Combined access to data and applications over a unified interface.
  • Presentation of dynamically updated information.
  • Personalisation of the available data through the user.
  • Implementation of the company wide secutity policy.
  • Automatic portal user notifications.
